Rule 3.2102 Substituted service

In most court cases, before you can use "substituted service" (leaving papers with someone other than the person you're trying to serve), you must first make several attempts to personally hand the papers to that person. This is called "due diligence."

In small claims court, that requirement does not apply. You can use substituted service right away without first trying to personally serve the other person multiple times.
