Rule 3.900 Purposes of reference

Courts in California can send certain cases to a "referee," which is a private person who helps handle parts of a lawsuit. However, there is a strict limit on how this process can be used.

A court cannot use this referee process to send parties to mediation. If a judge wants parties to try mediation, there are other rules and procedures that apply. This rule keeps the two processes separate.
