Direct evidence is proof that shows something happened without needing to guess or assume anything else. If the evidence is true, it proves the fact on its own.

A good example is an eyewitness who saw a car run a red light. Their testimony directly proves what happened. Compare that to finding skid marks on the road, which only suggests something may have happened and requires a logical leap to draw a conclusion.

Understanding the difference matters because courts treat direct and indirect evidence differently when deciding how strong a case is.
