Sometimes a judge needs expert help to understand a topic before officially recognizing it as true in court. When that happens, the judge can bring in one or more experts on their own or because one of the parties asked for it.

These experts are appointed and paid according to the rules already set up in another part of California law for court-appointed experts. The process for hiring and paying them follows that same standard system.
