If you told someone something was true, and they believed you and acted on it, you cannot later go to court and claim the opposite is true.

This rule stops people from playing both sides. For example, if you told a business partner that you owned a piece of property and they paid you money based on that, you could not then turn around in court and say you never owned it.

The key is that you did it on purpose. You meant for the other person to believe what you said, and they changed their behavior because of it. Once that happens, you are stuck with what you said or did.
