Rule 10.40 Appellate Advisory Committee

The Appellate Advisory Committee is a group that looks for ways to make California's appeals courts work better. They give recommendations to the Judicial Council, which is the main governing body for California courts.

The committee also suggests training programs for appeals court judges and their staff. These suggestions go to a separate group called the Center for Judicial Education and Resources Advisory Committee.

The committee must include a mix of people from different parts of the court system. This includes judges from the Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal, as well as trial court judges who have handled appeals. It also includes court clerks and administrators who run the day-to-day operations of these courts.

Lawyers are also required to be on the committee. The rule calls for lawyers who handle civil appeals, criminal defense appeals, and lawyers from the State Public Defender's office and the Attorney General's office. Having all these different people on the committee helps make sure many viewpoints are represented when decisions about appeals courts are made.
