Judicial Administration Rules Applicable to All Courts
(a) Color and length
The judicial robe required by Government Code section 68110 must be black, must extend in front and back from the collar and shoulders to below the knees, and must have sleeves to the wrists.
(b) Style
The judicial robe must conform to the style customarily worn in courts in the United States.
Judges in California are required to wear a black robe when they are on the bench. The robe must cover the front and back of the body from the shoulders down past the knees, with sleeves that reach the wrists.
The robe also has to match the traditional style worn by judges in courts across the United States. This means no unusual designs or non-standard styles are allowed.
