Rule 27.3 Extension of term of probation; termination of probation; order of discharge.

A judge has some flexibility when it comes to how long probation lasts. If there's a good reason, the judge can extend someone's probation, as long as the new length doesn't go past what the law allows. On the other hand, a judge can also end probation early and let the person off completely, before the original term is finished. This can happen because the probationer asks for it, the probation officer requests it, or the judge decides to do it on their own. If early termination happens, the prosecutor must be told about it first.

If someone simply finishes their full probation term without any problems, probation ends automatically. They don't have to file anything or ask the court for permission. Either way, whether probation ends early or by finishing the full term, the court must issue an official order saying the person has been fully discharged. Once that happens, the probationer can ask the court clerk for a certified copy of that discharge order, which serves as proof that their probation is completely over.
