Rule 8.3 Motion for continuance.

If someone in a criminal case needs more time before a hearing or trial, they can ask the judge for a continuance, which means pushing the date back. The person asking has to explain clearly why they need the extra time. Vague reasons aren't enough; the request needs specific details about why a delay is necessary.

The judge can also decide on their own, without anyone asking, that more time is needed and delay the proceedings. Either way, the goal is to make sure there's a real reason behind any delay, not just a way to stall the case.
