If you need someone to come to court and testify at your small claims trial, you can get a subpoena to require them to show up. All you have to do is ask the court clerk, and the clerk will issue the subpoena for you.
This means you don't need a lawyer to force a witness to attend. If someone has information that helps your case but isn't willing to come voluntarily, the subpoena legally requires them to appear and testify at trial. Just make the request to the clerk's office ahead of time so there's enough time to get the subpoena delivered to the witness before your court date.
