Rule 16.3 Settlements of Claims for Minors and Adults in Need of Protection

When a lawsuit involves a child or an adult who needs special protection, any settlement agreement must be approved by a judge before it becomes official. The parties cannot simply agree on a number and call it done.

This extra step exists to protect people who may not be able to fully look out for their own interests. A judge reviews the settlement to make sure it is fair and reasonable for the person being protected.
