When a patient dies, their medical records can be used in court if all the people in the dispute are claiming something through that patient's estate or belongings. This applies whether people are fighting over a will, inheritance without a will, or property that was transferred while the patient was still alive.

For example, if two family members are fighting over who should inherit a deceased person's property, neither side can block the other from using that person's medical records as evidence. The normal privacy protection for medical information does not apply when everyone involved is trying to claim something that belonged to the deceased person.
