If you are suing someone or being sued because of something that person did, their medical records and communications with their doctor can be used in court. Normally, what a patient tells their doctor is private and protected. But this rule removes that protection when the patient's health condition is directly related to the case.

For this to happen, the court needs to see a good reason to allow the medical information to be shared. The condition being discussed has to actually matter to the lawsuit, not just be vaguely related. A judge will decide if there is enough reason to make the private medical information available.
