Rule 1037.7 As used in this article, “domestic violence” means “domestic violence” as defined in Section 6211 of the Family Code.

This rule explains what counts as "domestic violence" when it comes up in court cases covered by this section of the Evidence Code. Instead of writing out its own definition, the rule points to a definition that already exists in another California law, Family Code Section 6211.

That other law defines domestic violence as abuse committed against a spouse, former spouse, live-in partner, someone you are dating or used to date, a parent of your child, or a close family member. Abuse can mean physical harm, threats, harassment, or other harmful behavior, not just hitting or physical violence.
