If you talk to a domestic violence counselor, they must tell you upfront that some of what you share may not be kept private. There are limits to confidentiality, and you have a right to know what those limits are before you open up about your situation.

The counselor does not have to give you this information in writing. They can simply tell you out loud before your conversation begins. This gives you a chance to decide what you want to share knowing that certain things might not stay between just the two of you.
