When a judge takes "judicial notice" of a fact, it means the judge officially accepts that fact as true without requiring anyone to prove it in court. This happens for things that are so well-known or easy to verify that no reasonable person would question them, like the fact that a certain date fell on a Tuesday.

Normally, a jury decides what facts are true in a case. But when a judge takes judicial notice of a fact, the jury no longer gets to decide whether that fact is true. The judge can tell the jury they must accept that fact as true. If either side in the case asks the judge to give the jury this instruction, the judge is required to do it.
