§ 225 [Definition of Statement]

A "statement" in court is not just something you say out loud or write down. It also includes physical actions that a person uses to communicate something, like nodding your head to mean "yes" or pointing to identify someone.

The key idea is that the action has to be meant as a replacement for words. If someone nods on purpose to answer a question, that counts as a statement. But if someone accidentally drops something, that would not be a statement because they were not trying to communicate anything.
