§ 720 [Qualification of Expert Witnesses]

If someone wants to testify as an expert witness in a California court case, they have to show they actually know what they're talking about. This means having special knowledge, skill, experience, training, or education in the subject they're being asked to discuss. A doctor could be an expert on medical issues, an engineer could be an expert on how a building was constructed, and so on.

If the other side objects, the person can't just start giving expert opinions right away. The court has to first confirm that the witness truly has the background needed to qualify as an expert on that topic. This step protects the case from unqualified opinions being treated as expert testimony.

The rule also explains how someone can prove they're qualified. They can use any evidence that would normally be allowed in court, including their own testimony about their background. So an expert can simply describe their education, work history, or experience to show why they're qualified, as long as that information is presented in a proper and admissible way.
