Rule 37 Interest on Judgments

When a money judgment from a civil case gets appealed and the appeals court agrees with the original decision, interest still keeps adding up on that money. This interest counts from the date the original court (circuit or district court) first entered the judgment, not from when the appeal finished. So if you win money in a lawsuit and the other side appeals but loses, you still get interest for the entire time the case was tied up in appeals.

If the appeals court changes the judgment or cancels it and sends the case back for a new money judgment, things work differently. In that situation, the appeals court will spell out specific instructions about how interest should be handled. This makes sure everyone knows exactly when interest starts and how much is owed, since the original judgment amount no longer stands as it was.
