Rule 7 Filing the Notice of Infraction

When someone gets a traffic ticket in Hawaiʻi, the officer or another authorized person has to send that ticket to the right court office. This has to happen within 10 calendar days after the ticket was written. The ticket goes to either the Traffic Violations Bureau or the District Court, depending on where the traffic violation happened.

This rule exists to keep the process moving quickly. If the officer sits on the ticket too long, it could cause delays or problems with your case. The ticket can be filed either as a paper original or sent electronically, so the method isn't as important as making sure it gets there on time.

For someone who received a ticket, this means the court should have a record of it fairly soon after you got it. If you're dealing with a traffic case and there's a long, unexplained delay before the court has any record of your ticket, that timing could become relevant to your case.
