Rule 3.9 Service as Arbitrator or Mediator

Judges are only allowed to do their regular court job. They can't step outside their role to act as a private arbitrator or mediator, or take on other judicial-type tasks, unless a law specifically says they're allowed to do this.

This rule exists to keep judges focused on their official duties and to avoid confusion about when someone is acting as a judge versus acting in some other capacity. It also helps prevent situations where a judge might use their position or reputation to take on side work that isn't part of their court responsibilities. If a specific law gives a judge permission to serve in one of these other roles, then it's allowed. Otherwise, judges need to stick to their judicial duties and nothing else.
