When people apply or petition to become a judge, a commission looks closely at who they are and what they have to offer. This includes their work history, skills, and personal character. The goal is to find people who are truly ready to serve as judges.
The commission looks at several key qualities during this review. These include honesty and the courage to do what's right, legal knowledge and experience, and general intelligence and good judgment. The commission also considers whether someone is caring and fair, hardworking and able to make decisions, and has the right temperament for handling a courtroom.
Finally, the commission is not limited to just these qualities. They can also weigh any other factors they think matter when deciding if someone is fit to become a judge. This gives them some flexibility to consider the whole person, not just a checklist of traits.
