Rule 240 Directed Verdicts

When a judge grants a directed verdict, it takes effect immediately. The jury does not need to agree with or approve the judge's decision.

This means the judge can end the case on their own authority. If the judge decides the evidence only supports one outcome, they can rule in favor of one side right then and there, without sending the question to the jury at all.
