Any side in a court case can challenge a witness's honesty or accuracy, even the side that put that witness on the stand in the first place.
This matters because sometimes a witness ends up saying something unexpected or unhelpful to the party who called them. Under this rule, that party isn't stuck with what the witness said. They can point out reasons the witness might be wrong, mistaken, or not telling the truth, just like the other side could.
In short, no one gets a free pass just because they called the witness. Both sides have the same ability to question whether a witness should be believed.
