Rule 1.1806 Rules by trial courts

Each local district court in Iowa can create its own rules for how cases are handled in that court. These local rules cover things like scheduling, paperwork, and other day-to-day practices. A majority of the judges in that district have to agree before a new rule or change can happen.

However, these local rules can't conflict with the statewide Iowa Rules of Civil Procedure. They only fill in gaps or address local practice details, not override the main rules everyone in the state follows.

Before any local rule takes effect, the Iowa Supreme Court has to approve it first. This means a district court can't just make up its own rules and start using them right away. The state's highest court checks the changes to make sure they are fair and consistent with the bigger picture of how courts should operate across Iowa.
