Rule 1.204 Foreign corporations

Companies that are based outside of Iowa, or incorporated in another state, can take part in Iowa lawsuits just like any other company. They can file a lawsuit under their company name, and other people or businesses can also file a lawsuit against them under that same name.

This means a business does not get special protection or extra hurdles just because it was formed in another state. It can be held accountable in Iowa courts and can also use Iowa courts to bring its own legal claims. The only limit is if a specific state law says otherwise. Unless a statute blocks it, out-of-state companies are treated the same as any other party in a case.
