Rule 1.307 Member of general assembly

If you're a member of Iowa's General Assembly, you can't be forced to take part in a civil lawsuit while the legislature is in session. This means courts can't make you file legal papers, respond to a lawsuit, or show up for court proceedings during that time.

The idea behind this rule is to protect lawmakers from being pulled away from their duties in the legislature by civil court cases. It gives them some breathing room so they can focus on lawmaking without worrying about lawsuits interrupting their work session.

Once the legislative session ends, this protection goes away. At that point, the normal rules apply again, and the lawsuit can move forward as it would for anyone else.
