Rule 1.456 Cross-petition, cross-claim, counterclaim; judgment

If someone files a cross-petition, cross-claim, or counterclaim in a lawsuit, it doesn't have to hold up the rest of the case. As long as deciding the main case won't hurt anyone's rights on that separate claim, the court can go ahead and issue judgment on the main case without waiting.

In simple terms, this means one part of a lawsuit doesn't have to wait for another part to finish, as long as they don't interfere with each other. For example, if a person sues someone and that person files a counterclaim back, the court can still rule on the original lawsuit right away if doing so won't affect the counterclaim later. This keeps cases moving forward instead of getting stuck because of extra claims that can be handled separately.
