Iowa Continuing Legal Education for Lawyers – 2026

Thirteen rules. Rule 41.1's purpose clause is blunt about the stakes: only by continuing their legal education throughout their period of the practice of law can attorneys fulfil their obligation competently to serve their clients, and failure to do so is grounds for disciplinary action by the supreme court. Rule 41.2 establishes the continuing legal education commission, Rule 41.3 the requirement itself, Rule 41.4 the annual fee and report, and Rule 41.5 the penalty for failing to satisfy it. Also here: confidentiality (41.6), inactive and retired practitioners (41.7, 41.13), the exemption for equivalent out-of-state attendance (41.9), reinstatement from suspension and its denial (41.10, 41.11), and the basic skills course requirement (41.12).
