Iowa Court Interpreter and Translator Rules – 2026
Eighteen rules on language access in the Iowa courts. Rule 47.1's definitions are substantive — a certified deaf interpreter is an interpreter who is deaf and holds a CDI or provisional relay certificate from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Rule 47.2 sets the minimum qualifications of a court interpreter and Rule 47.3 how one is scheduled, appointed and selected; Rules 47.4 and 47.5 classify oral and sign language interpreters, and Rule 47.6 establishes the Iowa roster. Also here: application and test registration fees (47.8), the Language Access in the Courts Advisory Committee (47.9), the complaint and disciplinary process (47.10), the recording of proceedings (47.11), interpreter and translator compensation (47.12), written translations of court-related material (47.13), the interpretation of legally binding documents submitted to the court (47.14), application to administrative agency proceedings (47.15), administration (47.16) and immunity (47.17). Rule 47.7 is reserved and shown as such. The interpreters' own Code of Professional Conduct, which the Legislature publishes as chapter 48, is numbered by canon rather than by rule and is not yet included.
