Rule 16.317 Additional time after electronic service

If someone sends you a court document electronically, you don't lose any time to respond just because it was sent that way. The clock for your response works the same as it would if the document had been mailed to you, faxed, or emailed. Iowa's regular civil procedure and appellate procedure rules already spell out how much extra time you get when documents are served by mail, fax, or email, and those same time limits apply here.

In short, electronic service doesn't shortchange you on time. You still get the same extra days added to your deadline that you would get with any other non-in-person method of service. This keeps things fair, since not everyone checks electronic filings the moment they arrive, just like not everyone opens their mail the same day it's delivered.
