Rule 16.604 Information that may be redacted

If you're filing documents in an Iowa court case, you're allowed to black out (redact) certain private information before the public sees it. This helps protect sensitive details that don't need to be shared with everyone who might look up the case.

The types of information you can hide include things like driver's license numbers, home addresses, and medical records. You can also redact financial information, employment history, and details about trade secrets. Information about crime victims, someone's cooperation with the government, and sensitive security details can be blacked out too.

There's one important exception. If the law requires that information to be included, or if it's actually important to the case itself, you can't redact it. So this rule gives you the option to protect private details, but only when that information isn't legally required or genuinely needed for the court to do its job.
