Rule 51:3.4 Appointments to Governmental Positions

Judges are not allowed to take on extra government jobs, like sitting on a committee or board, unless that job relates to law or the justice system. This means a judge cannot serve on something like a parks board or a city planning commission, because those roles have nothing to do with legal matters.

The idea behind this rule is to keep judges focused on their judicial work and to avoid mixing their role as a judge with unrelated government duties. It also helps prevent conflicts of interest or the appearance that a judge is too tied up in political or administrative matters outside the courtroom.

If a government position does involve legal issues, the legal system, legal services, or how justice is carried out, a judge is allowed to accept it. For example, a judge could serve on a commission that studies court procedures or improves access to legal help, since that connects directly to their work as a judge.
