Rule 51:3.9 Service as Arbitrator or Mediator

Judges cannot moonlight as arbitrators or mediators outside of their normal court job. They also cannot perform other judge-like duties separate from their official role. The only exception is if a law specifically allows it.

This rule exists to keep judges focused on their actual court responsibilities. It also prevents any confusion about when someone is acting as an official judge versus acting in some other private role. If a judge wants to help settle disputes outside of court, they need clear legal permission to do so.
