Plain-English Summary (for reference only — not a substitute for the rule text above)
This summary is not the rule. The rule text controls.
Every hearing held under Iowa's chapter 135L (which deals with certain juvenile matters) must be recorded. This can be done either by a court reporter typing shorthand notes or by an electronic recording device. No one involved in the case can choose to skip this step, even if everyone agrees to.
This means there will always be an official record of what happened in these hearings. That record stays private and protected under the confidentiality rules set out in rule 8.32. Having this record matters because it creates a clear account of what was said and decided, which can be important if someone needs to look back at the case later or if the case is appealed.
