Court reporters who are appointed under Rule 350 hold an official position within the court system. Once appointed, they are called official court reporters for their judicial district, and they act as officers of the court. This means they have a formal role in the legal process, not just a job on the side.
Before starting their work, each court reporter must take an oath or affirmation. This oath is required by Kansas law (K.S.A. 54-106) and it's a formal promise to do their job honestly and correctly. This step makes sure every official court reporter is properly sworn in before they begin recording court proceedings.
