If someone posted a bail bond to get out of jail, this rule explains how that bond obligation can be cleared. Once the person shows up to court as required, or if a judge decides to cancel or reduce a forfeiture that was ordered, the court will release everyone who was financially responsible for the bond from that obligation. This means the person who put up money or property as collateral no longer has to worry about losing it.
There are two other ways a bail bondsman or surety can get off the hook. They can pay the full amount of the bond in cash to the court, which settles the matter completely. Or they can turn the defendant back into police custody before the case requires it, which also cancels their responsibility for the bond. Either action releases the surety from having to pay if the defendant later fails to appear in court.
