If you appeal a criminal case to the district court and you end up convicted there anyway, the district court judge will hand down your sentence. On top of that, you'll be responsible for paying all the court costs.

This includes costs from both courts involved in your case. That means you'll owe fees not just from the district court proceedings, but also from the original court where your case started. In other words, appealing doesn't erase the costs from the first trial. If you lose on appeal, you end up covering the full cost of both rounds of court proceedings.
