Before someone can testify in court, they have to promise to tell the truth. This can be done through a traditional oath or through an affirmation, which is a formal promise without religious wording. Either option carries the same legal weight.

This rule makes sure every witness commits to being truthful before they say anything about the case. It gives the court a formal way to hold witnesses accountable for what they say. If a witness lies after taking the oath or affirmation, they can face legal consequences for perjury.

The rule also gives people flexibility based on their beliefs. Someone who doesn't want to swear a religious oath can still testify by using an affirmation instead. Both methods satisfy the law's requirement that witnesses formally commit to telling the truth.
