If someone is careful or skilled in general, that fact can't be used as evidence in court to prove they acted carefully or skillfully on a specific occasion. In other words, being a generally careful person doesn't prove you were careful during the specific event being questioned in the case.

For example, if someone is being sued for causing a car accident, the other side can't bring in evidence that this person has been a safe driver for 20 years to prove they drove safely on the day of the accident. The court wants to know what actually happened on that specific day, not what kind of person someone generally is.

This rule exists because a person's usual habits or skill level don't guarantee how they acted at any one moment. Even the most careful person can make a mistake, and even someone with a history of carelessness can act responsibly at a given time. Courts focus on the specific facts and evidence from the actual event in question, rather than allowing general character traits to sway the decision.
