14.02 When plaintiff may bring in third party

If someone sues you and you file a counterclaim against them, the roles can flip in an interesting way. The original plaintiff, who is now facing this counterclaim, can bring a third party into the lawsuit too. They can do this under the same conditions that would normally let a defendant bring in a third party.

In plain terms, this rule makes sure both sides have equal footing. If you get hit with a counterclaim, you are not stuck defending yourself alone. You have the same right as a defendant to pull in another party who might share responsibility or who might owe you money if you end up losing the counterclaim.

This matters because lawsuits are not always simple back and forth battles between two people. Sometimes a third person or company is actually responsible, or partly responsible, for what is being argued about. This rule lets the person facing the counterclaim address that reality by adding the right party to the case, instead of having to file a whole separate lawsuit later.
