55.02 Setting aside default

Sometimes a court will issue a default judgment because one side didn't show up or respond in time. This rule gives a way to undo that judgment if there's a good reason.

To get a default judgment set aside, you need to show "good cause." Some examples might include not getting proper notice of the case, having a valid excuse for missing the deadline, or having a real defense that deserves to be heard. The court looks at Rule 60.02 to decide what counts as a good enough reason.

This matters because a default judgment can mean losing a case without ever getting your side heard. If you were hit with one and think you have a fair excuse or a real defense, this rule gives you a chance to ask the court for a second look instead of being stuck with the result.
