6.05 Additional time after service by mail

When someone sends you a notice or document by mail or electronic service, and that document starts a deadline for you to act, you get extra time to respond. Kentucky adds 3 days to whatever deadline applies, since mail and electronic delivery can take longer to reach you than handing something to you in person.

This extra time applies to most court papers sent this way. However, it does not apply when a summons is served on you by mail. That situation follows its own separate rule and does not get the extra 3 days.

In short, if a deadline is running and you were served by mail or electronically, add 3 days to figure out your real due date. This gives you a fair chance to respond, since mailed or electronic documents may not reach you as fast as documents delivered directly to you.
