8.14 Motions

If you want to ask the court to do something in your case, you need to file a motion. A motion is just a formal request asking the judge for a specific order or decision.

This request has to be in writing, unless you're already in court during a hearing or trial when you make it. If you're standing in front of the judge during a hearing, you can make your request out loud instead of on paper.

Your motion also needs to clearly explain two things: why you're asking (the specific reasons behind your request) and what you actually want the court to do. You can't just say "I want relief" without explaining what that relief looks like or why you deserve it. Being clear and specific helps the judge understand your request and rule on it fairly.
