607 Who may impeach

Any side in a court case can challenge a witness's honesty or believability, even the side that called that witness to testify in the first place.

This matters because it used to be that a lawyer couldn't attack the credibility of their own witness. Under this rule, that's no longer true. If a witness says something surprising, changes their story, or turns out to have a reason to lie, the lawyer who put them on the stand can still point that out to the judge or jury.

In simple terms, no witness gets a free pass just because of who brought them into the case. Both sides can question whether a witness is telling the truth, no matter which side asked them to testify.
