1.000 Title and scope

This rule explains what the Rules of the Supreme Court are and what they cover. These rules can be called by their full name, "Rules of the Supreme Court," or by the short name "SCR." People often use the short name when looking up or citing a specific rule.

The rules in this first section deal with how Kentucky's court system is run. This includes policy decisions and administrative matters that keep the courts operating smoothly. It is not about how to file a case or argue in court. Instead, it covers the behind the scenes rules that guide the court system itself.

The note at the end gives some history. It explains that these rules used to have different names in the past. Before 1978, they were called the Rules of Appellate Procedure. Before that, going back to 1976, they were called the Rules of the Court of Appeals. The name changed over time as Kentucky's court system changed, but many of the same rules carried over under each new name.
