Rule 2-17 Notice of Judgment

When a Louisiana Court of Appeal makes a decision, the court clerk has to let everyone involved know about it. This means sending notice of the judgment to every lawyer who is officially part of the case, as well as to anyone who is representing themselves without a lawyer.

The clerk also has to keep a record showing that this notice was actually sent. This record, called a certificate, gets placed in the official case file. It lists the date the notice was sent, the names of everyone who received it, and how it was sent to them (for example, by mail or email).

This rule matters because it protects your right to know what happened in your case. Once you get official notice of a judgment, certain deadlines start running, like the time you have to ask for a new hearing or file an appeal to a higher court. Having a clear record of when notice went out helps avoid disputes later about whether someone found out about the decision in time to act on it.
