If you work as in-house counsel in Louisiana, you have specific financial and registration duties to the state bar. Starting July 1, 2005, you had to pay the yearly disciplinary assessment fee, pay your Bar Association dues, and complete the annual registration process. These are the same basic requirements other licensed attorneys in the state must meet.

You also have to keep up with continuing legal education, often called CLE. This requirement started with calendar year 2005 and continues every year after that. This means you need to complete a certain number of education hours each year to stay current on legal knowledge and skills, just like other practicing attorneys in Louisiana.

Together, these rules make sure that lawyers working as in-house counsel are held to the same standards as lawyers in private practice or other legal jobs. You pay the same fees, follow the same registration steps, and keep learning through education courses, even though you work inside a company rather than at a law firm.
