Art. 1010 Petitions for disclosure

If you were adopted after your birth parents' rights were legally ended, you (or someone acting on your behalf if you're still a minor) have the right to ask the court for information about that process. This rule explains how to start that request.

To do this, you file a document called a petition. This petition asks the court to share records or details connected to the termination of parental rights case. The rule also tells you exactly how to title this document, using the format "In re the termination of parental rights to" followed by the child's name.

This process gives adopted children, or their representatives, a legal way to learn more about their background. It sets up the first step needed before a court will consider releasing any information.
