Art. 1203 Service; resident parent

If a parent needs to be notified about a court case and that parent lives in Louisiana, the notice has to be delivered in one of two ways. It can be handed directly to the parent, or it can be left at the parent's home with someone else who lives there (this is called domiciliary service).

The timing matters a lot here. Whichever method is used, the parent must receive this notice at least 30 days before the court hearing starts. This gives the parent enough time to learn about the case, understand what's happening, and prepare before showing up in court.

This rule exists to protect parents' rights to know about legal actions involving their children and to have a fair chance to respond. Courts take this notice requirement seriously, since a parent can't defend their interests if they don't know a hearing is happening or don't have enough time to get ready for it.
